Sokei Aoyama

Kiln Master
​Traditional craftsman with national certification. Representative of the Kusanokashiragama Kiln. Shirotenmoku teabowl maestro, Tajimi City Intangible Cultural Asset Holder. Master Aoyama is a specialist in Japanese pottery, with a particular emphasis on the Muromachi and Azuchi-Momoyama periods. Effectively reengineered the production technique of the mediaeval Shiro-tenmoku tea bowl. Responsible for instructing students on the use of the potter's wheel and the art of creating matcha bowls.

2021 A white Tenmoku chawan was added to the collection of the Tokugawa Art Museum.  
Received a certificate of appreciation from the museum.  

2022  
Built a large kiln, Choshin Kiln, in Kokeizan.  

2023  
Contributed an article about "White Tenmoku" to *Nagomi*, published by Tankosha.  

2024  
Exhibited a White Tenmoku chawan by Sokei at the special exhibition "[Onada Kiln Ancient Kilns]" at the Tajimi City Cultural Property Protection Center.  
Displayed a White Tenmoku chawan at the Saga Prefectural Nagoya Castle Museum.  
​Received the Agency for Cultural Affairs' 2024 Regional Cultural Meritorious Service Award.
